more info from PHOENIX here.
This Sunday, July 18th I will be at the w.9th street Phoenix coffee shop as a guest host of their PHOENIX FORUM series. I am honored to have been invited but more than that, really excited! I know it is summer and everyone has a million things they cram into their weekends, but take an hour and come have a chat with me between 2-3pm.
Underscoring any project I partake in is my unrelenting desire to create a more intimate sense of community here. The quality of my life and the opportunities and experiences available to me grow exponentially with each new person I meet, and as a result my desire to positively impact my community in return is strengthened.
I am interested in Cleveland because this is my birthplace. I know it is not perfect and it is not my role to make it so, but it is my CHOICE to focus on and expound upon the positives of this community and maybe along the way ignite that desire in enough others that we CAN impact real change. In the meantime, I have found that a CHANGE IN PERSPECTIVE is enough to completely change the way I experience my city.

Ok. Cleveland summers are amazing. on the list of what is so awesome about Cleveland summers, near the top you will find PATIO’S !!!! And as far as I am concerned some of the best patio’s in Cleveland are on EAST 4th Street in DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND.
How often do you go downtown? Do you live in a near west neighborhood and find that you rarely cross the bridge? Well, this past spring I realized I DID THAT! I live just over the bridge in the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood, and had nary a reason to go downtown…like, ever.
Well, that epiphany did not sit well with me, so I immediately started finding reasons to go back downtown and I am once again under its spell. I switched to a downtown based hairdresser and dentist and let me tell you, enduring the dentist while looking out over downtown and to lake erie from a 15th floor office is almost enjoyable, and the arcade where I now patronize the marengo spa is one of the most stunning buildings I have ever been to anywhere!
And then there is E.4th Street…with the charming overhead stringed lights, world-class restaurants and sights and sounds of live music and entertainment, it really does cast a spell, particularly this time of year.
I have been going back several times a week for dinner and/or drinks, because it feels just that good to spend time downtown.
So on Thursdays E.4th street is hosting PATIO PARTIES with vendors and music joining the roster of great restaurants, bars and entertainment. And since, I cannot miss an opportunity to spend more time on this street ROOM SERVICE will be setting up there EVERY THURSDAY this summer between 5-8. It is really fun, come visit, hang out, get a drink get some dinner!

what i will be doing friday:

Friday, October 30th from 5-10PM and Saturday, October 31st from Noon-5PM. All You Can Eat is a collective exhibition of architectural ideas for vacant sites in Cleveland, Ohio. If Cleveland has a surplus of anything it’s vacant land, and the organizers have faith that others, like them, have favorite sites around the city upon which they’d love to unleash their new (or old) tricks. This exhibition hopes to provide the impetus and opportunity for many to unleash said tricks in a publicly visible way. Friday’s event will feature a buffet of tasty treats for both your stomach and your intellect. As well, DJ Jose Alberto Luna will be providing audio treats for your ears of his own creation throughout Friday evening.
All You Can Eat is not intended to generate “shovel-ready” proposals but to instigate dialogue; it is a forum to encourage the development of new concepts both aesthetic and programmatic. The organizers charge participants with being as outlandish and uncompromising as they can be.

Check out the US 2008 City Ranking of Sustainability and Cleveland’s impressive placement amongst the top 50 US cities…
Since hiring its first sustainability program manager in 2005, the city of Cleveland has worked to improve itself across the sustainable-spectrum. And the Rustbelt city has done a heck of a job, taking a giant leap up SustainLane’s charts this year. Even if improved reporting is largely responsible for the gain, that’s a sign Cleveland is taking its ecological health seriously. And speaking of health, Clevelanders should have ample opportunity to eat right, with 225 community gardens and 25 for-profit farms within the city limits… and more on the way, thanks to a new zoning classification for the Urban Garden District. Perhaps one of the most exciting developments is the city’s participation in an effort to start an offshore wind farm on Lake Erie. If this project flies, it’ll help Cleveland’s energy utility to source 25 percent of its power from renewable sources by 2020. An even simpler step Cleveland could take? Offer residents curbside recycling.
CHeck it all out here.

I will be posting about my recent event, MADE IN THE 216, but until i get to that, here is some of the press the event received over the past week….
even cleveland (i love this blog because the blogger, Stephanie, has a GREAT appreciation for good design. and while this is absolutely a CLEVELAND-based blog, it is almost more a design blog)

Room Service GREATLY appreciates her joining us for the event and for writing a really lovely review!
Please visit Stephanie’s blog and check out all her posts, she is VERY prolific!! even cleveland

another blog that i have signed up for the RSS feed to and read daily is: i heart cleveland

well, just to look at the logo, it is instantly clear that this blogger appreciates good design; the fact that she owns her own design firm, CHARTREUSE, well, it just makes LOTS of sense to me! This blog is a great daily read because it is always brief…(unlike my blogs!!) so it is easy to just open with your email and start the day with what is usually a heads up on some unique or fun thing to do in Cleveland…Charity, the author, blogged that she would be going to the MADE IN THE 216 event and explained a little bit about the genesis of the event…check it out here and while your there sign up for her blog!
i heart cleveland
My friend Michelle’s blog, CLEVELAND FOODIE is a beloved Cleveland-based food blog. She gets interviews with all of our top chef’s & dines out A LOT with her husband Jamie.
They recently visited my shop for the first time on their way to Luxe and she subsequently posted about the MADE IN THE 216 event…Thank you Michelle!!!!!!

Cleveland Epicure is another awesome Cleveland-based food blog written by Alan of Ohio city who, along with his wife, Nancy, have become friends through my store. Alan included word on my event, MADE IN THE 216 in not ONE but TWO of his newsletters! thank you and i hope the ohio city crawl worked out with the weather, i couldn’t believe that rain, i instantly thought of you both!!!
